Why?

Why do we make horrible decisions? Why is our natural response selfish and cruel? It is because deep down inside of us something is telling us that there is no other way. We may trick ourselves and say that we did believe that there was other options, but that would be a lie. If I truly believed there was a better way, then I would have taken it. Our hearts, our emotions cloud our thoughts, the road is foggy and all of the signs point in one direction, self. If allowed to rule, our emotions will have us convinced that any other way is impossible, that to turn from self would surely doom us. It's like a dream, it feels real and makes complete sense, that is, until you wake up. Once awake, we marvel at how easily fooled we were to believe that was real. And so , after a "high" we realize what a completely stupid move that was. We vow never to fall for that again, only to fall for the exact same trick mere hours later. Sin is not creative, we are just stupid. (incredibly so some days). But what can we do? It feels so real in the moment, why? How do I know this is not who I really am? Truly thank God that He has provided a tool so sharp it can discern between the body and the soul.

"...for the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart."
-Hebrews 4:12

"All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate for every good work."
-2 Timothy 3:16-17

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so t that you will able to resist in the evil day, and having dome everything, stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to  extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
-Ephesians 6:10-17

God has given us the needed weapons to fight those monsters inside of us, not only has He provided weapons, but He has provided the lessons and energy for us. We need only except them and we can save ourselves so much pain and tears. Lesson One, being steadfast of mind:

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentile spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heart and seen in me, practice these things and the God of peace will be with you."
-Philippians 4:4-9

"The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts You. Trust in the Lord forever, for in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock."
-Isaiah 26:3-4

This is not a suggestion on God's part, He is commanding us to not be anxious. We are not to be defined as anxious and stressed, no we are to take all of our burdens to our Savior and Friend, giving thanks the while time that He cares and watches over us. To truly lay all at the Savior's is to take up a peace that makes no sense to the world. In the world's eyes we have every right to be stressed and put out, but we know from God's Word that to allow one's emotions to rule them is to scream to the world that our God is not enough.
